Department of Basic Aquatic Sciences

Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Zehra Arzu BECER

Division of Basic Fisheries Sciences

Studies in the department covers general biology, ecology, evolution and genetics of a wide range of species of fishes and other vertebrate or invertebrate organisms in freshwater and sea water. The department offers   the research results  in use of  fisheries and aquaculture.

Division of Marine Biology

Researches carried out by the Department of Marine Biology are involved with marine biodiversity, fish migration routes on the Turkish Seas, stock assesment of economic species, protection and monitoring for threatened marine species.

In addition, specimen collection and composition of their DNA data bank, basic and molecular taxonomic studies, water quality and determination of marine biologic pollution by using microbial and molecular biotechnology, quatic microbiology are main objectives of the Marine Biology Department.

Division of Freshwater Biology

Division of Freshwater Biology conduct several projects on conservation and management of our inland fish stocks. Also one of our aims is to determinate fauna and flora of inland waters in Turkey

Department of Aquaculture

Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Süleyman AKHAN

Division of Aquaculture

This is indisputably accepted that aquatic resources are highly important and indispensable animal protein sources for adequate and well-balanced human nutrition. So, importance of aquaculture has been increasing. For this reason, our department studies on freshwater and sea water organisms’ culture, cultured fish nutrition and feed technologies. These studies are intended for finding alternative species, improving culture techniques, management of sustainable water sources and doing aquaculture production in harmony with environment. Furthermore, some scientific studies about problems, technique and scientific support have been done cooperation with private companies and official institutions in Mediterranean Region.

Division of Fish Diseases

Fish Diseases constitute one of the most important problems in the farmed fish. Fish diseases occur the end result of interactions of the disease, the fish and the environment. The Fish Diseases Department is included into the Aquaculture Program. Fish Diseases Course focuses on fish health problems that are of national and/or global significance. Infectious diseases including viral, bacterial and fungal infections, parasitic infestations, the immune system of the fish, shellfish diseases, nutritions problems in this course are characterized and the contribution of stress factors and pathologic conditions to disease are discussed.

Division of Fishing Technology

This division is working on subjects which developing for fishing and fisheries technology, generally in Turkey and particularly Mediterranean.

Division works on biological variety in our seas, determine species stocks of economical value, protection of fisheries source and make this source sustainable, developing fish capture techniques, searching possibility of application area,  determination of fisheries management and prohibitions.

Division of Fish Processing Technology

The catching, production and transportation healthy from producer to consumer of seafood are so important subjects. The making necessary research about transportation to consumer under hygienic conditions of seafood that have been obtained with catching and aquaculture in our country is aim of this division. The studies have been done about the chemical composition, freshness, suitability to HACCP, hygienic conditions, salting, drying, smoking, cold storage, conservation technology, classification of production, packaging, carrying according to the cold chain rule of seafood.
