Department of Aquatic Basic Sciences

Department of Aquatic Basic Sciences

The Department of Aquatic Basic Sciences consists of three sub-departments: Inland Waters Biology, Fisheries Basic Sciences, and Marine Biology.

Department Head: Prof. Dr. Zehra Arzu BECER

Inland Waters Biology

Our country has a rich potential in terms of inland water resources. There is a need for studies to determine the biodiversity in natural lakes, reservoirs, ponds, and rivers.

In our faculty, scientific studies are conducted in the field of inland waters biology to preserve our aquatic resources, ensure their efficient management, and regulate fishing activities. The research topics of our sub-department include the identification of fish fauna and flora in these water resources, determination of planktonic and benthic organisms, water quality and pollution, and eutrophication.

Faculty Members of the Sub-department:

Prof. Dr. Z. Arzu BECER (Head)

Fisheries Basic Sciences

The determination of the biological, evolutionary, and genetic characteristics of fish and other vertebrate/invertebrate organisms living in marine and inland water habitats, obtaining information about their environmental relationships, breeding and nutritional requirements, and their use in fisheries and aquaculture, providing scientific and economic concepts for the evaluation of data obtained from biological research, conducting feasibility and environmental assessment studies in the establishment stages of aquatic product enterprises, determining the basic principles and rules of marketing, teaching the position of the fisheries sector, marketing channels, and economic analysis criteria constitute the scope of this sub-department.

Faculty Members of the Sub-department:

Prof. Dr. Serpil YILMAZ (Head)

Dr. Öğretim Üyesi Olgaç Güven

Marine Biology

In the Marine Biology sub-department, studies are conducted on the determination of biological diversity in our seas, systematics, ecology, and distribution of marine macroalgae and seagrasses, identification of economically important, endangered, and invasive species, and their use as bioindicators, detection of marine pollution using microbial and molecular biotechnology.

Furthermore, molecular taxonomic studies of marine species, establishment of collections of these species, and DNA databases, as well as topics related to aquatic microbiology, are among the future-oriented projects.

Faculty Members of the Sub-department:

Prof. Dr. Erhan MUTLU

Assoc. Prof. Dr. İ. Tülay ÇAĞATAY (Head)

Dr. Öğretim Üyesi Emine Şükran OKUDAN
