Dean’s Message

After the establishment of the Marmara Fishing School on Marmara Island in 1928, which was the first of its kind in the history of the Republic, the “Baltalimanı Fisheries Institute” was founded in Istanbul in 1930 to work on fisheries and aquaculture research and education. In higher education, the Department of Fisheries under the Agricultural Faculties prior to 1980 became a Faculty at Istanbul and Ege Universities in 1982. With the increase in trout production in our country in the 1970s and the acceleration of research on marine fish farming in the 1980s, Fisheries Engineering has become an important profession in today’s global economy.

Therefore, Mediterranean University established a Faculty of Fisheries in 1999 with the aim of conducting research on fisheries topics in the Mediterranean basin and producing qualified workforce for the sector. In our faculty where we started to form our academic staff in 2000, “Fisheries Engineering” postgraduate program was opened in 2001 and “Fisheries Engineering” undergraduate program was opened in 2002. The education and training of Fisheries Engineering have been uninterrupted since then. With the opening of a doctoral program in 2005, our Faculty has become a fully-programmed Faculty of Fisheries and continues to educate competent fisheries engineers at local and national levels.

One of our missions is to assist our students’ career development by focusing on applied education. In this sense, providing practical application areas for our students during their four-year education, introducing them to industry representatives, equipping them with not only theoretical but also practical knowledge about their future professions are all part of our education-teaching process.

Fisheries engineering is one of the most important professions that will offer solutions to healthy nutrition problems foreseen as one of the major challenges of the future. Production, fishing, health, monitoring all stages from hatchery to harvest, and research on the presentation of seafood, which is a healthy food, to the consumer are all carried out at our faculty. It is our most important duty to teach our profession to our students who chose our faculty and to do so in the best and most successful way.

In this context, it is our main goal to give suiting value to the profession of fisheries engineering with an objective and problem-solving management approach in line with the views, suggestions, demands, and requests of our students without deviating from scientific principles while making every effort possible in career planning for our young people entrusted to us by their families.

As Akdeniz University Faculty of Fisheries employees and management, we wish success to our future colleagues who are studying at our faculty and to our graduate colleagues who hold important positions in the industry. We would like to once again emphasize that we are by their side in all their professional problems.
